Media Watch on Hate Speech September- December 2015

Within the scope of that Hrant Dink Foundation's Media Watch on Hate Speech Project between 2009-2019 in the four-month period covering September-Octomber-November-December 2015, 1016 columns and news articles and 1341 hate speech items targeting national, ethnic and religious groups had been found.

In this period constituting the third four-month period of 2015, a significant increase in the number of publications containing hate speech is found compared to the previous period. This increase can be explained by the developments like deepening of the social polarization, restart of the conflicts after the Suruç bombing on July 20, Turkey’s isolation period in international scene, diplomatic crises with other states and international institutions and media’s targeting of Syrians who escaped from the civil war and came to Turkey. Furthermore, this social and political backdrop provides insight to the ways of generating hate speech and causes certain groups to become targets over and over again.

When a distribution per targeted groups is made, it is seen that Jews have the largest number of hate speech items against them with 316 items. Armenians follow them with 217 items and Syrians has the third place with 202 items. Christians with 121 items, Cypriot Greeks and/or Greeks of Turkey with 79 items, Greeks with 59 items, non-Muslims with 41 items, the British with 38 items and atheists with 35 items follow them as the groups that are subjected to hate speech.

In the section where discourse targeting women and LGBTIs are analyzed, you can find qualitative analyses through a limited number of examples, which are selected with the purpose of exposing and questioning the patriarchal and heteronormative discourse which is rooted in journalism and used intentionally or unintentionally.
